Mounted Charge

A Mounted Charge is a special kind of action that may be taken by a creature that is on a mount. Outlined below are the requirements and effects of a Mounted Charge.

  • While performing a Mounted Charge, you have double your movement speed. However, you may only move in sections of 10 ft. at a time. Moving 5 ft. only is not allowed.
  • When making a Mounted Charge attack, you may only make one attack regardless of the number of attacks that you may make on a normal turn.
  • A Mounted Charge may only be done as an attack action, and there must be 10 ft of clearance on the other side the target in relation to the direction of the Mounted Charge. Otherwise, this target is invalid for a Mounted Charge.
  • When making a Melee Mounted Charge attack with a Lance or a similar polearm weapon with the reach property (i.e. NOT the Whip), the attack deals an additional weapon die + your strength modifier of damage.
  • When making a Ranged attack during a Mounted Charge, you must take disadvantage on your attack.
  • When making a Melee Mounted Charge attack with a weapon without reach, or a whip, you deal an additional 1d8 + your Strength modifier damage
  • If your attack hits, you automatically move an additional 10 ft. past your target and may not move any further. You take a penalty of -2 to your AC until your next turn.
  • In addition, your target may make a single attack of opportunity against your mount.
  • If your attack hits and your attack roll is 6 points greater than your target's Armor Class, you might Topple them, dealing a further 1d6 damage and knocking them prone on a failed Dexterity saving throw of DC 5 + your Strength Modifier + ⌊your Character Level/2⌋.

Flavour

It is folly to stand strong before a charging deathrider. The galloping of hooves and the screaming of a razor-sharp blade will be the last things you hear should you attempt it.

Notes

  • Huge and Gargantuan creatures are immune to being Toppled unless you are Huge or Gargantuan yourself.
